Covered California Clarifies Deadline for Applicants

deadlineCovered California has clarified the process for completing Obamacare applications following the March 31 deadline. The announcement followed the Obama Administration decision to extend the final deadline for current applicants.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) originally set a March 31 deadline for enrollment. The administration announced that people who had started, but not completed applications, would now have until April 15 to finish. Covered California has confirmed that the state exchange will follow those guidelines as well.

California residents who started to enroll before 11:59 p.m. on Monday, March 31 will have until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15 to finalize their selection. To qualify for the extension, residents must have created an account online, filled out the “Apply for Benefits” page, and saved their in-progress applications. Applicants who complete those steps can take until April 15 to select a plan.

Anyone who did not begin an application by March 31 may have to wait until October for a chance to enroll for 2015. Since other Obamacare deadlines have been postponed, this may be subject to another revision. In addition, people who have a life-changing event may request special enrollment within 90 days of the event. Life-changing events include births, adoptions, job loss and insurance loss.
