Important Health Insurance Terms Every American Should Be Familiar With

While the Affordable Care Act is making obtaining insurance much easier for every American, it has also introduced terminology that some are not familiar with. Here, we’ll attempt to clarify some of the terms and concepts relating to healthcare as a whole.

Affordable Care Act

Affectionately referred to as "Obamacare", the Affordable Care Act is the health care reform laws that were passed back in 2010. Some of the provisions will take effect in 2014, others will roll out in the coming few years.

Co-Payments

Co-payments are the portion of the health insurance bill paid out-of-pocket by the insured, usually directly to the healthcare provider at the time services are rendered.

Deductible

Some insurance policies require the insured to pay a portion of the insurance fees out-of-pocket before the insurance company begins paying the bill. This initial portion is the deductible; generally, the higher the deductible, the lower your monthly premium payment.

Grandfathered Health Plans

Plans existing on or before March 23, 2010 are considered "grandfathered" and are therefore exempt from the provisions of the Affordable Care Act. Plans can be group plans or individual.
