How to Remain Safe While Trick or Treating

With Halloween a little more than a week away, it becomes increasingly more important that we prepare ourselves for the festive holiday! In order to have a smooth trick or treating experience, you must follow basic safety precautions. With so many intoxicated drivers on the roads on Halloween, you must be careful to ensure a safe holiday. Gathered are some vital safety tips for trick or treating this Halloween:

  • If you’ve decorated for the holiday, make sure that all of your decorations are safe and don’t present any unique hazards for children. All flammables should be kept away from candles, lights, and flames to avoid a fire. Likewise, you’ll want to mow your lawn and trim your hedges to maximize visibility. The last thing you want is for a child to injure themselves on your property and leave you with a liability claim on Halloween evening.
  • Make sure your child’s costume is safety approved. If possible, try to avoid masks that limit visibility. Likewise, you’ll want to make sure your child is visible to all motorists. You can equip them with flashlights and glow sticks! Adding reflective tape to costumes adds extra security.
  • Even though the neighborhood you’re trick or treating in seems safe, you must be aware of partygoers speeding through neighborhoods to get to their adult Halloween fun. To combat this growing issue, make sure to keep your eyes on the road, keep your distractions limited, and always look both ways before crossing.
  • Most importantly, make sure to look through your child’s candy to ensure that no candy has been tampered with. You’ll want to throw away any homemade candy or candy with faded labels.
