Whether you’re traveling near or far, these safety tips make your road trip a breeze.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, plenty of Americans are preparing to travel to visit friends, family, and loved ones. Whether you’re hitting the slopes to kick start the season or heading to the beach to enjoy the last of the fall sun, it’s important to review safety tips.
Prep and Plan
Take some time now to prepare for your trip. Plot out a route, along with an alternative route just incase, and locate rest areas and gas stations. On the day of, plug in your destination on your GPS device to receive real-time updates about accidents, traffic, and road closures. Before you get on a highway, know your exit by name and number, and the signs as you near the off-ramp. Leave early so that you’re not rushed!
Get the Car Ready
Your tires are what keeps your vehicle on the road – literally. Check the tire pressure and top up as needed so that the psi is at the manufacturer’s recommended level. If you’re going to be driving over rough terrain, ensure that your tires have enough wear and tread on them to last. If not, replace them!
Stock Supplies
Your car’s emergency supply kit should include a first aid kit, battery-powered radio, flashlight, blanket, jumper cables, bottled water, non-perishable foods, maps, a tire repair kit, and flares. Add in any other essentials that you may need. Remember to bring your cell phone car charger, too!
Keep it Calm
Remember that larger vehicles take a longer time to a complete stop, so avoid cutting quickly in front of them. Be aware of their blind spots and always stay far behind them so that they can see you in their wing mirrors.
Keep Your Eyes Peeled
Distracted driving is a major cause of traffic accidents. Even if the kids are bored in the backseat, don’t take your eyes from the road. Drive safely – and bring games for the children if you need to!
Drive safely and watch out for those who don’t! Enjoy this Thanksgiving holiday by creating magical memories, not tragic ones.
