Improve your heart health by eating the right foods.
Over the past few decades, there have been numerous studies that have been released flipping what we know about diet on its head. While there tends to be a lot of confusion about what is healthy and what isn’t, there are some clear choices about good food and bad food when it comes to heart health. Since February is American Heart Month, it brings us the perfect opportunity to share the list of heart-healthy foods!
Oatmeal
Oatmeal is high in soluble fiber, which can lower cholesterol. While oats can do your heart good, it’s best to avoid instant oatmeal, which often contains sugar. Other whole grains such as bread and pasta are also good for the heart as long as they contain the entire grain.
Berries
Berries are chock full of heart-healthy phytonutrients and soluble fiber. All different types of berries, including blueberries, strawberries, and cranberries are known to contain anthocyanins, flavonoids (which are antioxidants) that may decrease blood pressure and dilate blood vessels. Anthocyanins give plants their red and blue colors!
Soy
Soy products, including tofu and milk, are a good way to add protein to your diet without unhealthy fats and cholesterol. Soy products contain high levels of polyunsaturated fats (good for your health), fiber, vitamins, and minerals. What’s more, soy can reduce blood pressure in people who eat a diet high in refined carbohydrates. Compared to cow’s milk and other proteins, soy protein can decrease LDL or “bad” cholesterol.
Legumes
Legumes such as beans, peas, and lentils are another excellent source of protein without a lot of unhealthy fat. They contain no cholesterol and significantly less fat than meat. Legumes help to control blood sugar, making them heart-healthy and great for people with diabetes.
Green Vegetables
When it comes to your health, you can’t go wrong with vegetables. Green vegetables may give an extra boost to your heart. Veggies, such as broccoli, spinach, and kale are high in carotenoids, which act as an antioxidant and free your body of potentially harmful compounds. They’re also high in fiber and contain lots of vitamins and minerals.
